"Not everyone can be a hero some people have to stand on the sidewalk and clap as we pass by."
Roy Rogers
Part 1 of 4
The second leg of the 1987 UEFA Cup Final at Tannadice Park, Dundee, Scotland.
I would love to hear from people who recognise anyone on this film and from the players involved or their clubs.
I have found out recently, that Jacques Tati the acclaimed French film maker of films such as "Mon oncle", "Mr.Hulot's Holiday", "Jour De Fete", "Trafic", "Playtime" - also filmed the 1978 Uefa Cup Final between Bastia and PSV Eindhoven (on You Tube under user name "Orka2b"). In his film Tati focuses upon the supporters and does not attempt to record both. Both Tati's and my own film seam to a have a similar feel. His film was lost for 24 years unlike my one for 20 years!
From the Wikipedia encyclopedia --
"In 1978, Tati began filming a short documentary on a French (Corsican) soccer team, 'Forza Bastia', which he did not complete. His daughter later edited the remaining footage which was released in 2002."
Film Title: "Little Giants"
Techical details: Filmed using Super8 film stock.
A similar type of film as used by Abraham Zapruder, otherwise known as the Zapruder film that gained widspread coverage in the film JFK.
The camera used for "Little Giants" was a basic one and rather old one for the time - even in 1987. The camera size was around the size of a adult hand.
Part 1 -- "A Giant's Path"
The journey to the final.
The day of the final in Dundee. How a small club in a small city stays the same yet different on this big day. The street scenes of a time passed.
Tannadice leading up to kick off.
Music - One Of Us (Abba): Football is a team game between two teams -- where only one can win.
This video has been lost in my cupboard for almost 20 years. I came across it again and have decided to share it on You Tube. It is virtually the original edited version that was filmed and completed in 1987. With this year being the 20th anniversary of this final it is appropriate for it to be now available to the world. It has that charm that comes with time, age and distance. European football in 1987 was very different from it is today. It was very much football matching one-team-against-another-team in competition -- very much based a 'one-of-us'; not the 'groups-of-giants' mentality of the Champions League of today. In 1987 -- the final could be played anywhere in Europe and the teams reaching the Final could see their home team win or lose a European trophy -- in their home town. That all had a certain charm.

The 2007 Champions League Final is between AC Milan and Liverpool. The Media had made much of the potential all British Final between Liverpool and Manchester United. In 1984, Dundee United met Roma and won the first leg 2-0 but lost the second leg 0-3 and lost the tie. United would have met Liverpool in the final. This year another United (Manchester) won the first leg against AC Milan 3-2 but lost the second leg 0-3 (the same sencond leg score and Dundee United!). Manchester United would have met Liverpool in this years final. Instead of those two all British Finals they were and are - Roma v Liverpool and AC Milan V Liverpool.
